Researchers at Microsoft have developed a prototype of a "smart bra" embedded with physiological sensors that seek to monitor a woman's heart activity to track her emotional moods and combat overeating. The sensors can signal the wearer's smartphone, which then flash a warning message to help her step away from the fridge and make better diet decisions. Read Original Content

At the Federal Communications Commission mobile health innovation expo Alere Connect, showcased HomeLink and MobilLink, cellular hubs that use the cloud to transfer patient health readings to a doctor for monitoring and evaluation. The products have seen positive test results. Physicians who assign the devices to their patients see a 70 percent reduction in hospital readmittance. Read Original Content

Lack of enrollment of eligible patients into remote patient monitoring systems is the major cause of underuse, with more than one-third of all patients receiving remote patient monitoring-capable devices not being enrolled within 180 days of device implant," researchers wrote in Circulation. A study published earlier this year found that although mobile apps increasingly are being used for the prevention and care of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, these available apps have failed to attract user attention and positive reviews. Researchers reviewed the Apple iTunes and Android Google Play stores for HIV/STD-related apps, concluding "many of the very features that make apps such a promising platform for delivering HIV/STD prevention and care services appear to be lacking in the currently available HIV/STD-related apps." American Well is joining forces with CampusMD to provide telehealth services to college students across the country for a monthly subscription. CampusMD will use American Well's telehealth platform to enable students to log on to a portal at any time, through any mobile device.  Via that portal, students can read profiles and ratings of local physicians, select an appropriate healthcare provider and connect by video feed for information, diagnosis, treatment and prescriptions.
